Check out the Sandcastle Rec Hall at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area. Visit the new craft room, participate in programs, watch movies, play arcade, board games, ping pong... Three days after my retirement in August 2015, Helen (dear wife) and I took off on our first retirement trip. titled Easy to the East Coast. The first stop we made on that trip was at the Fort Fisher AFB Recreation Area in Kure Beach, North Carolina, which turned out to be a great decision. As the name of our first trip suggests, we went north from Fort Fisher and eventually reached Big Pond, Maine. This year, as we planned Bertha and the Beach, another late summer trip, this time heading south along the coast, we knew we had to return to Kure Beach. A lot has changed in two years.

The most significant change is that Bertha, our travel trailer, is accompanying us on this trip. Bertha joined the family in late spring. We have taken a few short trips since then, but this will be our first extended RV trip and Helen and I were looking forward to the trip and the opportunity to experience the RV lifestyle. We should have organized Bertha better and Helen's skill in the art of organizing a living space would rival anyone's...she is a master.

An hour after arriving at Bear Creek Campground in Asheville, North Carolina, we stopped to watch the solar eclipse. Glenda, host of Bear Creek, gave us her last two pairs of eclipse glasses when we checked in. There were no glasses available in Knoxville and we felt fortunate to have come to Bear Creek at the right time. Asheville's location afforded a view of 99% of the totality. With only a few small clouds in the sky, our view was perfect and we didn't miss the other 1%.

On our first full day in Asheville, we took a tour of the Biltmore House, something we've never done even though we only live an hour and a half away. The experience was extraordinary and we both came away very impressed with the largest residence ever built in America. While I'm sure many of our readers have taken this tour, I want to share our impressions of this beautiful building, so we'll post an article and pictures from our Easin'Along tour later.

While in Asheville, we also planned to meet up with our friends Sally and Bill, who are temporarily living in Bear Creek until they find a home to buy in the Asheville area. Easin' Along readers will recall the article about this remarkable couple from a few weeks ago and their adventures in Rita, a compact trailer that has been their home on the road for the better part of fourteen years. We looked forward to them sharing some of what they learned about Asheville after parking Rita at Bear Creek. After we met, they were generous with their time and gave us a tour of the Asheville area where they were looking for a home, then walked us downtown where we enjoyed a delicious dinner at a brewery.

The next morning we hitched Bertha to Bert, our Dodge Ram truck, and headed to Falls Lake State Recreation Area near Wake Forest, North Carolina. At five o'clock the journey was a little longer than we would have liked, the traffic was heavy and we missed a few turns before reaching our destination. Despite a bit of a rough ride, we reached camp and were happy to meet good fortune again. Our campsite was secluded in dense forest and only about 150 meters from a beautiful lake and swimming area. The showers were about 100 meters behind us and separated from our view by trees. The weather was cool and extremely comfortable. We spent the next two nights in total relaxation mode, walking, swimming and reading... perfect.

By now Helen wanted to get her beach done, which meant it was time to hitch up Bertha and head to Kure (aka Curry) Beach, about 20 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina. We arrived on a Friday and it just so happened that there was a summer concert scheduled for that evening at the Rec. The very friendly staff who greeted us told us that the summer concerts are held every two weeks and are free to the public. We didn't think much of it until cars started arriving from all directions around 5:30 that afternoon. Helen and I made a quick salad dinner and then went to the beach so she could calm down the beach obsession a bit, and when we got back there must have been a thousand people (no exaggeration) sitting on the wide lawn listening to music. from Liverpool, a Beatles revival group.

The concert was a blast. All age groups, from children to fossils, made up the audience. I estimated that about 80 people filled the play area in front of the stage and were having a lot of fun. The band was phenomenal. The lead singer was a dead ringer for Paul McCartney and even played guitar left-handed. Every song they played they played the Beatles version perfectly. I made my way through the large crowd singing at the top of their voices as I took pictures. Around 8:30, when Liverpool started playing a rousing rendition of I Saw Her Standing There, followed by a perfectly sung I Want to Hold Your Hand, not a soul left the area. The band played two more tunes for their curtain call, then thanked the audience and called it a night. Helen and I don't remember when we had more fun. Little did we know this experience was in store for us...the best surprise ever.

The next morning, early, we drank our coffee and went to the beach to look for shells. The tide had not yet covered Coquina's picturesque surface and it was alive with birds seeking breakfast from the small creatures that lived in the mossy cover of this structure along the shore. With her ever-sharp skills, Helen found a shark tooth and then conch shells for her collection within minutes. This was a beautiful morning sunrise. Kure Beach looked good again. I'm so glad we're back. This morning and the next, were probably the best of our stay as a tropical storm was brewing to the south.

Before closing, however, I wanted to mention some of the changes that have taken place at Fort Fisher for ours

Readers since we were last here. Once upon a time, the construction of a duplex on the beach was nearing completion. They are now occupied by visitors from Fort Fisher and are beautiful. They have large sitting porches, full kitchens, one, three and four bedrooms and full bathrooms. Additionally, there is a very nice laundry facility adjacent to the duplexes. The Beach House Grill and bar is open for breakfast and lunch daily, and guests can dine on the beautiful porch or deck overlooking the Cape Fear River. Be sure to visit Fort Fisher on MilitaryLiving.com. This is a wonderful and affordable vacation spot for veterans and their families.

Behind the duplexes are the caravan park and the showers. There are 19 hard sites with full links. Several overflow locations are located around the Recreation Area that have electrical and water hookups. We were accommodated in an overflow location which worked very well and was very private.
