Previously, UA Little Rock housed the Offices of Veterans Affairs, the Military Academic Adviser and the Military Ombudsman. The center integrates these offices to streamline the registration, storage and processing of VA documents. Military students and veterans from major and online universities can visit the center to socialize, study and learn about available resources.

The facility has 1,634 square feet of classrooms, a study room with computers, a meeting room, and a cafeteria. According to the center's website, they serve "more than 700 active duty, reserve, National Guard, veterans and their family members."

The center has two permanent employees. Director of Military Student Success Kathy Oliverio is a veteran of the United States Air Force. Oliverio represents the needs of military students and veterans at UA Little Rock by advising undeclared military students and serving on various campus committees. He also has relationships with military bases and local, regional, state and federal agencies.

Assistant Director of Military Student Success Cheryl Kleeman is a veteran of the US Coast Guard and is the school's accrediting officer for VA educational benefits. Some of Kleeman's responsibilities include verifying enrollment, verifying grades and academic status, and ensuring payments are verified for VA education benefits.

In addition to part-time staff, there is a group of VA Work Study students available to assist military and former students.

When Oliverio arrived at UA Little Rock as a student, he had 20 years of Air Force experience and more than 95 hours of military technical qualifications. Oliverio was also a teacher for seven years and taught at the Airline Leadership School. Although he earned his credits through the Community College of the Air Force — a regionally accredited school — he only transferred six hours.

"So it was pointless," Oliverio said. After experiencing the devastation a student can face when transferring military education credits, Oliverio has become an advocate for military students and veterans.

"I know the training that soldiers receive... Yes, there are very technical credits, but there are also people who have jobs, who work in accounting and finance, who are doctors, who are dentists. We even have historians," Oliverio said.

He went to Susan Hoffpauir, then the assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs. "I presented the information I knew and he said, 'That makes sense, right?' Oliverio said.

So the campaign was launched with the hope of getting the scientific community to understand the cost of military debt. Oliverio then learned that the Army, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard all have their courses evaluated through the American Council on Education [ACE].

"And through ACE, they have professors sitting in the classroom saying, 'You know what? If that student was in my class, he would take three hours of engineering math, three hours of physics, three hours of chemistry..." They go and evaluate and recommend... When we get all this information, we present it to the faculty. we did," said Oliverio.

For the sixth year in a row, UA Little Rock has been designated a military school by Victory Media, a leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds.

One of Oliverio's proudest moments was being able to work with an Air Force technical sergeant who was a non-profit public affairs officer. "He had attended a lot of Department of Defense radio and television courses. Well, he happened to be pursuing [mass communications]. So I combined his Air Force and Department of Defense training and gave him 21 hours [of 36] hours. given. in one to its mass [communication] degree," said Oliverio.

While Oliverio still faces obstacles, he is committed to working with students to help them achieve their goals. "Some people have a very difficult time transitioning from military life to civilian life. If you don't accept the transition, it can be very difficult. The main purpose of this office is to help with this transition," said Oliverio.

Students and military veterans may face challenges unknown to others. While their experiences have provided opportunities to develop discipline, responsibility, and leadership skills, many military students and veterans have also experienced deployment events that have been associated with depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Additionally, the transition from a highly structured lifestyle to one with less structure and more freedom can be difficult for some military students and veterans to adjust to.

An important aspect of solving this problem is creating a community for these students that helps them transition from military to civilian life. For students who can make it to campus, a veterinary center counselor visits the UA Little Rock facility every Wednesday.
